A historical industrial electrification initiative
We are proud to introduce our partnership: ZEQL (Zero Emission Quicklime), an electrified manufacturing method and brand-new factory concept. Our first plant is planned to open up in 2025. For us, starting from scratch was the only way forward toward an emission-free quicklime industry, free from its dependence on fossil fuels. We believe it is our responsibility to explore innovative solutions that have the potential to make a significant impact on lowering CO2 emissions. With ZEQL, we have taken a historical industrial electrification initiative that will set a new standard for quicklime manufacturing.
Forerunners of the industrial transition
The ZEQL concept is unique because it eliminates all CO2 emissions in two ways. Firstly, by switching from fossil fuels to renewable electricity, and secondly, by capturing the CO2 released from the limestone when it's heated during the calcination process. With this new method, the ZEQL concept has the potential to decarbonize the quicklime manufacturing process, resulting in significant environmental benefits.
SMA Mineral will, over time, replace its existing plants with new electrified ones at a rapid pace. Already by the end of 2027, SMA Mineral will lower its carbon footprint by 50%. That’s huge, but it gets even better as we plan to let other actors in the industry take advantage of the concept.
Enabling industries to lower their carbon footprint
Industries like construction, steel, pulp and paper, and mining have taken important steps to lower greenhouse gases in recent years. However, these efforts need to accelerate as these industries are still significant contributors to carbon emissions. By using climate-neutral quicklime in their manufacturing processes, ZEQL enables the transition towards decarbonization of these industries.

This shift towards climate-neutral manufacturing is a significant step towards achieving a more sustainable future.
